Life expectancy of Stairlifts

Life expectancy of Stairlifts wow hard question! Guess one can't put an honest to goodness figure on this as there are too many variables! Lift manufacturer, Quantity of use every day, regular serviced, Location Internal-External and so on

The older Stair lifts produced in the 80s are a selection of the best designs ever made! They were built like Military Tanks. Made of steel and well over engineered. There are still plenty in operation today and you would be having a look at 20+ Years service.

Sadly I can't see modern Chairlifts built in the 21st century being around in the next 20 years. I'd say the life span for a modern Stair-lift of today would be 10 years and if you're having a look at reselling a modern Stairlift (2nd hand sale) the resale age would be a maximum of 5 years.

The modern Chairlift is plastic junk! The carriages are made of plastic the seats are extruded molded chairs. Nothing is robust about these units. Ok they all look modern and are compact slimline design. Sorry I'm old school give me a tin box with a motor and 1 or 2 simple relays, winch drum with wire rope I'm happy.

Stairlift electronics has gone mad! There are units being produced today that contain up to 5 different PCB's printed circuit boards. Use of electronics in modern Stair lift systems is extensive and concepts are being developed ongoing in the same way as they are for other kinds of transport like motor vehicles C'mon it is a damn Stairlift under engineered over complicated and actually no requirement for it.

Chairlift companies make cash selling new Stairlifts. They tend to bring out new models each year. Within just 3 years your Chair lift may be obsolete and parts no longer available. The second-hand value will be a fraction of the price you paid for it.
