Care home considerations

There are lots of things to take into consideration when you are thinking of moving to a care home, with the most important decision the one regarding the type of home you'll move to. Family and friends can help with this but the best way is by arranging a care assessment.

Making an appointment for a care assessment is easy and quick and anyone can do it. The assessment will take things into consideration such as your current state of health, your likely state of health in the near future and will take into account all your personal wishes. When this is complete, someone will then be able to advise you on all the available options open to you.

No one is ever forced to move to a care home and a care assessment merely highlights the options available and emphasises how you want to live your own life and where. If for example, you decide after the assessment that you still want to live in your own home, no matter the assessment results, every effort will be made to make this possible.

After the assessment is complete, you may have a short amount of time to consider your options. If you decide you would like to look into things further, a financial assessment by the council may be the next thing you have to do. The financial assessment will look at the amount of money and assets you have and will conclude whether you have to contribute to none of, part of, or all of your care costs.

It is not always the case that you will have to contribute to your care. In some situations the total care costs will be met by your local council. In other circumstances you may even be offered an interest free loan based on the assets you own, which will only have to be repaid at a later date.

Managing your money at this time can prove difficult and many people choose external financial help when they are going to move to a care home.
