Omega 3 Essential Fish Oils

| Thursday, March 31, 2011
By Owen Jones

Omega 3 essential fatty acids are frequently in the news, but they appear to drift in and out of public consciousness. Let us review the terminology, they are known as 'essential' because they cannot be created in adequate quantities by our bodies. In other words, we have to eat them.

The supreme importance of Omega 3 essential fatty acids actually came to light in the 1970's while a group of Danish scientists found than Inuits in Greenland had a far lower rate of cardiovascular problems than Europeans and Americans, despite ingesting a diet high in fat.

However, the difference between the diets was that the Inuits got their fat from sea creatures whereas the other nationalities got theirs from land animals. The significance of Omega 3 essential fatty acids was established

Once that original research had been verified, other tests on the same topic were carried out by other groups and they all confirmed the significance of Omega 3 essential fatty acids in our diets. These substances help prevent heart disease, cancer, diabetes and macular degeneration and will also alleviate these conditions if you did not find out about them until it was 'too late'.

Our main source of Omega 3 essential fatty acids is oily fish like tuna, salmon and mackerel fish and other sea foodstuffs. Investigation backs up the age-old old wives' tale that fish is brain food. It actually is, but it also goes further than that. Omega 3 can help stave off lots of the so-called age-related issues like memory loss besides the ones already mentioned above.

Some research has also indicated that a deficiency in Omega 3 in children may lead to learning disorders like hyperactivity and attention disorders. There could also be a relationship to dyslexia. Other disorders that are more certainly linked to a shortage of Omega 3 are depression, some allergies and arthritis. This means that expectant mothers ought to be watchful of their intake of Omega 3.

This fish oil has also been seen to reduce the seriousness of high levels of cholesterol and triglycerides. It also seems to have a beneficial, anti-aging effect on the skin and wrinkles if taken internally as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Most dietitians would recommend eating oily fish twice per week, but that does not mean that you cannot ingest it in capsules.

It is vital to see Omega 3 in relation to other essential fatty acids like omega 6. Omega 6 and omega 3 compete for the same place in our systems and that position is just so large. If you eat too much omega 3, omega 6 cannot get a look in and vice-versa. It is a broad topic, so you are encouraged to do more research or take the advice of a dietitian.

However, before you believe everything that they say, ask about the interaction of omegas 3 and 6 and see what they say.

Why Private Care Services Become More and More Prominent

|
By Alexandra Lopez

Today, private care services is one of the most in-demand ways to take care of elderly loved ones. More children or families now count on private caregivers to assist their aging parents or relatives in daily activities. The number of care institutions also bloomed to support those who can't personally take care of their seniors. There is indeed a big difference in terms of how elderly people were taken care of during the old times and how they are assisted at the present.

One of these changes is the decrease in the number of family members per household. More families choose to have fewer children today. Because of this, the number of people who can share the responsibility of caring for their aging parents also decreases which makes the situation harder for the available "carers". Another factor that influenced the growth of the private care services is the distribution of family members in different geographical locations. More and more people get separated from their elderly parents because of career or because of having their own families in a different state or country even.

Another factor that affects the trend of caregiving is the increase in the life expectancy of people. Since the field of medicine and science gets more and more advanced, new discoveries lengthen or extend the life of seniors. Some products of research improve physical or mental health and there are also those that cure people of their difficult diseases. Because of this, more caregivers are then needed to take care of these seniors.

Another important thing to consider is how the structure of the family changed. Women changed from being plain housewives who took care of the rest of the family's needs, the household chores and the care of the elderly. Nowadays, there are more women who choose to have careers instead of spending 100 percent of their time at home. And because of having a lot of responsibilities at work, some of these career women no longer have the time and energy to take care of their elderly parents.

With all these changes, the need for private care services continues to intensify. On the other hand, families should now begin to adjust themselves and try to set some time for their seniors. There's just no better way to take care of them but to do it themselves. Although caregivers are well-trained and have earned the right to do their jobs, what would really make the elderly feel much better are the care and attention given by their own families.

|
By Abbey Martin

It's difficult to predict their exact moods and reactions. They could be calm a moment and violent the next; Alzheimer's disease sufferers that is. What you need to do is have yourself properly educated to manage such instances because they will likely be surprising and from time to time severe. With someone living with you and suffering from the disease, you are bound to have your hands full enough in any case.

Nobody knows all of it, which means you might be mistaken too; but so also could your caregiver - the person living in to care for the friend or loved one you've got at home that has Alzheimer's disease. You possibly can help concerns by exchanging notes with them about what you know and what you learn from time to time. This will help you stay well informed and offer the most effective care possible for this friend of yours or loved one.Be sure that you know if an occurrence happens in your house in which your loved one with Alzheimer's is involved. Their dementia could potentially cause them to act strangely and you might be ignorant of this. Make sure that anyone who could be around at the time knows enough to inform you of it before they cause you to make dangerous errors by such oversights. If a family member coming home who suffers from the disease, you might want some routines readily available for their satisfaction. There's a whole lot you can learn about those from visiting homes and facilities where such patients are cared for, in addition to places where such are sold. Even if you cannot afford them all, the little you are able to install will make an improvement.

Some forms of activity would need to aid to improve the day of somebody with Alzheimer's. It does not matter a lot if it is in a home or in your private home, you should search for a way to enable them to relax and get some good times. Whether or not this amount to a bundle, get it done anyway. In fact it can help, just like a lot of analysis on the issue shows. So, if it aids, it can also surely help your loved one that is suffering from this also.

In taking care of a loved one with Dementia, you need to come in at almost all hours throughout the day to check on them. Enjoy a chat if you can possibly make a meaning of what they're expressing, or if they can make any sense at all of you. It's a way of getting them to function their ailing brains so you have to help them with it. Research on the subject has shown that there are some things that worsen a sufferer's condition. For instance, if you can, you can impose restricted visitation hours for your family members battling with Alzheimer's disease. Little bits of this and that might trigger events which might be unpleasant and traumatic for the patient. If the restricted hours are the method for you to work around that, by all means, indulge. Assess if you might allow a person affected by Alzheimer's disease to wander off of your property if you are their caregiver. There are various degrees of progression of the condition that may figure out how lenient you could be with them. Your physician might be able to help you balance those little details, so that you could stick close to them.

If you are the only person that a patient of Alzheimer's disease recognizes or chooses to relate with, you might have something going there. You must use that vantage point to introduce the other family members to them. This is bound to be tough because the sufferer is never in a hurry to cooperate, but even in the most difficult of circumstances it is workable.

Prevent Heart Disease and Stroke in Assisted Living Facilities

| Monday, March 28, 2011
By Janet Smytherton

According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in January 2011, heart disease and stroke are the first and third leading causes of death in the United States.
The best way we can ensure a long and healthy life is to maintain a heart healthy diet. We plan meals for our families with this in mind, just like our parents did for us.But who is planning the heart healthy choices for our senior residents? As seniors become more sedentary with age, they require fewer calories, yet their nutrition needs remain the same. More than ever before, the food choices we make in our advancing years are critical to our continued well-being.

This being true, you would think that assisted living facilities, geared to the needs of elderly residents, would provide heart healthy menu choices.
Unfortunately, this is not always the case. Instead, they pride themselves on presenting menus that are geared to pleasing future residents, residents and their families, including their children and great grandchildren.
They serve what's popular - from hamburger with fries and soda, to a hot fudge sundae, and everything in between. These less than healthy choices are beautifully prepared and attractively served, but somewhat lacking in meeting the nutritional needs of most seniors.

Do the assisted living facilities meet the nutritional requirements of their senior residents? Seniors who in the past planned nutritious, well-balanced, low-fat and low-sugar meals for their families, are often now eating food that may not be good for them.
Too often, the residents tend to order whatever appeals, or whatever their neighbors are eating, possibly because their ability to make wise choices is impaired by early dementia. Instead, they order whatever sounds good or whatever the others at their table are having.

At the end of the meal, residents who are already quite full are offered attractive desserts that are carried from table to table by the wait staff. It's difficult to say no to desserts that are so attractive. And these desserts frequently have more fat and calories that most people should have in an entire day.

When will assisted living facilities offer low-fat, low-sugar nutritious meals for residents who prefer them? This is something that we all need to work on, and it will take time and effort.

When you visit an assisted living facility, you can ask about the nutritional guidelines used in their meal preparation. Request foods that you know are healthy choices.

If you are considering assisted living for yourself or a loved one:
1. Ask about meal and snack options that can help avoid heart disease, stroke and other complications.
2. Ask if there are plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables available.
3. Ask for foods that are low in saturated fat and cholesterol and high in fiber.
4. Ask that they limit the use of salt in food preparation and have table salt available only if requested.
5. Ask if they can help residents to monitor their weight weekly.
6. Inquire about daily activities that can help the resident maintain a healthy weight and lower both cholesterol and blood pressure.

The American Heart Association has made this easy by publishing guidelines for the "Heart Check" mark, which indicates compliance in fighting heart disease and stroke.

I am hopeful that heart healthy menu choices will soon be the norm in assisted living facilities rather than the exception.

Getting Your Will In Order - The Viewpoint of Glenn Duker

|
By Glenn Duker

Indeed most people understand the need for a Will or, if one is in existence, updating it periodically. Merely out of good organisation, we should all have a last will and testament. If you are parents, a defacto partner or even a business proprietor, the relevance of an up to date Will will likely prevent your surviving loved ones further anguish. Far too often people delay getting a Will in place. In this brief article, I will set out the need for a Will, the need to periodically update your Will and basically how the Will is managed after your passing away.

My name is Glenn Duker. I am a solicitor who has drafted many wills for various individuals over the years.

Why should you put a Will in place? A Will represents the means by which you nominate how your assets following your passing are to be distributed. It is not uncommon to endeavour to exclude certain people from benefiting also. Not having a Will in place may result in your remaining assets being distributed to those whom you did not intend to benefit from your estate. Do It Yourself Will kits are not the best approach in my opinion. It is best not to risk a claim against your estate. Your Will is a valuable and important thing and is the way in which you direct the distribution of your assets. Considered legal advice is best way to go.

If you have a pre-existing Will, when should it be updated? Most certainly, if your personal situation changes, which might include a new marriage, a divorce, the birth of children, retirement, ceasing a defacto relationship or entering into one. These are major legal milestones in relation to your Will which trigger circumstances whereby you want your current wishes accurately documented. You may just desire to include or remove certain individual benefits or charities from time to time.

The will is administered by a an Executor (or Executrix, if a female). The Executor's initial role is to apply for the Grant of Probate, which is a document sealed by the Court authorising the distribution of assets according to the Will. The assets are then so distributed and the Executor's role comes to an end. This is to be distinguished from the role of a trustee who administers any assets held on trust by the estate, typically for children. Clauses in Wills relating to trustee powers are usually very broad, permitting maximum flexibility.

Dying intestate is not always problematic but it can be. You will have lost the opportunity to cater for those who have survived you. The peace of mind created through a valid, properly executed and well thought through Will and knowing that your affairs have been left "tidy" is worth it in itself. Please note that the content of this article is general only and always seek the advice of a lawyer in relation to your Will.

Advantages of Board and Care Homes

| Sunday, March 27, 2011
By Janine Sanderstine

Elderly parents and their families are increasingly turning to Board and Care homes to provide the continuous assistance that is needed. Technically, they are called Residential Care Facilities for the elderly (RCFE's), because the care is provided in single family, residential homes. The government regulations for board and care homes may vary from state to state as they are regulated by the Department of Social Services in each state.

Most board and care homes serve no more than six seniors in a home-like family setting. These homes have usually be remodeled to be handicap accessible. Residents either have their own bedroom and bathroom or they share with one other senior. The doorways to bedrooms and bathrooms are widened to be wheelchair accessible and the living areas are spacious and uncluttered.

Residents are in the company of their caregivers and house mates, generally preferring to spend their waking hours in the living or family rooms. Each resident receives a great deal of individual attention due to the favorable ratio of caregivers to residents. At night, there is always at least one caregiver in the home to provide assistance during the night.

Structured activities, such as exercise routines, outings, brain games, sing-a-longs, etc. are offered at most homes. Most residents are willing to participate in these activities as they are held in the living areas of their home. There is often better participation in activities than in an assisted living facility, probably due to the limited number of residents and individualized attention given.

Board and care homes may be better able to address specific needs such as food preferences and individual schedules. There is much more room for attention to individual preferences in the smaller setting. Because of the higher ratio of caregivers to residents, and the fewer number of caregivers, they are able to better satisfy the needs of each resident.

Just like assisted living, housekeeping, laundry and meals are included. Most homes provide transportation to doctor appointments as well. The services provided include dressing, bathing, grooming, eating, medication management, hygiene and continence issues. In some, haircuts and manicures are included as well. In fact, they really address every need the senior has.

Arrangements can be made by the board and care staff to have home health care professionals like podiatrists, physical therapists and home nurses come to the home providing the services for residents that they require. Caregivers will listen carefully to these professionals and ensure that they follow up care occurs as planned.

A close bond is created between residents and caregivers in this family like atmosphere, helping to make the resident feel secure and well-cared for.

Some board and care homes prefer to specialize in one specific area of health care and the related needs. Whether it's stroke, diabetes, dementia, Parkinson's or Alzheimer's, you may be able to locate a board and care homes that has expertise in that area and can provide the services needed.

Most often, board and care homes are managed and owned by an individual or family who is closely involved in the day to day care of its residents. These caregivers are deeply committed to the residents and their families. There are many of these homes spread throughout our local neighborhoods, and they are certainly worth a visit.

Guide Dogs And Aging

|
By Owen Jones

Aging has its plus points, like having more experience, having family and often having not so many financial concerns, but it also brings other worries with it too, usually health worries. One of the health problems that older people worry about is their eyesight.

Most individuals like to remain independent, but blindness makes you to be dependent, particularly if you go blind when you are older. At least while you are younger, you have a long time to learn how to deal with it.

There are a number of ways that you can lose your sight when you are older but one that effects 10% of those more than 65 and 30% of those over 75 years is macular degeneration. It is often referred to as age-related macular degeneration, ARMD or just AMD because it tends to have an effect on those individuals who are more than 50 years of age.

However, macular degeneration just affects the centre 2.1% of your field of vision, so it is very rare for ARMD to be the cause of total blindness. The problem is that that 2.1%, centre field of vision is highly important for recognizing individuals and for reading.

So what can you do about it, if you develop ARMD? One option would be to acquire a guide dog, a 'blind dog', as they say in the UK or a 'seeing eye dog' as they say in America. A guide dog will help prevent you from bumping into objects, which you might well do if you lose your middle field of vision.

Most registered blind people are not totally blind. Some are worse off than others but sufferers of ARMD usually retain 97.9% of their field of vision, which is the peripheral vision. A guide dog would cover the remainder for you.

Guide dogs are taught as puppies so they will stay with their blind friends for seven or eight years or more This allows the dog and the owner to build up a wonderful relationship, as all people do with their dogs. However, the rapport of a blind person with a guide dog though is extra-special. The dog knows that it is being depended upon for its master' safety.

If you decide to go down the road of acquiring a guide dog, the best place to begin is your national association for the blind, the address of which you can find either at your doctor's, in Yellow Pages or on the Internet. Some countries' organizations will charge you for providing a guide dog and others will subsidize your acquiring a guide dog and its training.

It would be a good idea to arrange a guide dog as soon as you are diagnosed with a disease that threatens your eyesight because that will give you more time to get to know and choose a puppy as your future companion.

If you are lucky and your doctor saves your eyesight, you have lost nothing and you have gained a wonderful, intelligent friend, but if the worst comes to the worst, you will have an invaluable, seeing, protective, wonderful, intelligent friend. You cannot lose.

Today's Choices for Assisted Living

| Saturday, March 26, 2011
By Janine Sanderstine

As we age, there may come a time when we need assistance in our daily life. Living at home with family or in a nursing home used to be the only choices. Nursing homes are generally for the very sick or very disabled. Living with a relative at home is not always possible.

Now, we have another alternative: Assisted Living facilities, sometimes called residential care facilities, offer everything from independent living to assisted living with varying degrees of assistance. Everything from independent living, custodial care to care for terminal residence can be offered, with the help of visiting nurses and hospice care when needed. This type of living arrangement offers meals, housekeeping, transportation, group activities and outings, laundry, and assistance with activities of daily living as needed. These activities of daily living can include help with bathing, dressing, toileting and the administration of medications. These services are provided in a secure setting with a homelike, residential atmosphere.

In some state, assisted living facilities, called Board and Care, have recently become plentiful. They are generally operating in a residential home, housing from three to ten seniors. Sole proprietors often run these facilities by themselves, hiring additional caregivers so that they can provide coverage around the clock, seven days a week. Because they are small, the care is very personal, and the resident has the feeling of living at home. Although they don't generally have licensed nursing available, by contracting with home health agencies, visiting doctors and nurses, and other services, they can provide all necessary services in a homey atmosphere. The board and care homes often operate with smaller overhead, as they don't have layers of management and skilled professionals like the larger apartment-like facilities. The operators often have a genuine love of the elderly, and care for them with the same love and affection as they would a family member. Due to their smaller size, they don't usually have a robust marketing plan, and often get their residents by word of mouth and referrals.

Assisted Living facilities are licensed by the state, and each state has different requirements for licensing. There is no nationwide standard of care for assisted living facilities. There are many difference from one state to the next, and also differences within the same state. Some of the facilities are small, often operating out of a residential home. Others are quite large, serving hundreds of seniors in one complex.

Assisted living facilities usually offer a home like appearance, offering private apartments with doors that lock, instead of the hospital look of a skilled nursing home. Receptions or concierge are available to assist residents and greet guest instead of a nurse at a nursing station. Both large and small gatherings are held in the living and socializing areas which are strategically placed throughout the building. Arts and crafts, guest speakers and performers, music sing-a-longs and many other activities are offered regularly for the enjoyment of residents and their guests.

Separate wings are offered at many assisted living facilities for residents with Alzheimer's disease or dementia. There is a greater ratio of caregivers to residents in these memory care units, and security is offered to prevent wandering.Convenience is the reason some seniors choose to live in an assisted living facility. All their basic needs are met easily and they are in an environment where they are able to make friends, participating in activities and even go on outings. They rest assured that should their need for assistance increase, the additional services will be available for them without relocating.

Making the Best Choice in Care for the Aged

| Friday, March 25, 2011
By Gnifrus Urquart

An important though sometimes unpleasant part of life is making arrangements for those who are no longer able to take full care of themselves. Whether it is one's parents or another elderly relative, those advancing in age often require more help and assistance than younger, able-bodied relatives would like to admit. However, getting the best care for eldery relatives is not as difficult and as emotionally gut-wrenching as some might initially think.

A major concern for most adult-age children is the well-being of their parents, especially as parents start to take on the role of children and children begin to adapt to the role of caregiver. While it can be very emotionally draining to watch one's parents need help with tasks that they were initially very much capable of handling, this change in life does not need to cause the level of concern that it often does.

After admitting that one's parents are in need of assistance, it can be a little heartbreaking to start taking the steps necessary to provide the best level of care. Though this is tough, it is essential. The best care possible is only an option after someone admits that it is time to do something for his or her aged relatives, and this is also an important part of the human experience.

Before getting too upset about this transition, it is often comforting to think that many parents, even if they are physically a little weaker, have already made their own arrangements towards care and help. Most parents will have their retirement plan set up in one way or another, and some may even hire their own caretakers to avoid the option of an assisted living facility. Be sure to talk with your parents about their needs and desires, and make sure that all of their bills and obligations are in order. Allowing one's parents to remain independent is one of the biggest parts of caretaking, and it is important to not make anyone elderly feel as though they are incapable of handling any of the arrangements in their own life, even if assistance is necessary.

If assisted living is not an option and around-the-clock care is not going to cut it, the best option may be to welcome one's parents into your own home. While this can be tough both on the parent and the adult child, the transition doesn't have to be impossible. Providing a safe and comfortable space can greatly cut down on any potential troubles, while bringing families closer together at the same time. The most important first step is preparing a room that feels comforting and also safe for an elderly relative.

However, sometimes around-the-clock care is a better choice. While this option is often seen as more expensive, the truth is, it is often less costly than making the commitment to an assisted living facility. However, talking to your elderly relative's doctor is the best way to determine what sort of care is necessary, and whether or not this can be accomplished at home.

Regardless of if it is in one's own home or their parents home, some steps need to be taken to optimize safety. Be sure to tack down all carpets, check out the house to make sure there are no physical obstacles, and provide a cell phone or a single-touch emergency response device so that, in case of an emergency, getting help is as simple as pressing a single button. This can decrease stress both for adult-age children and their parents alike.

Above all, don't ever forget when providing physical care for aged relatives that there is more to safety and security than just ensuring that, in case of a medical emergency, care can be provided quickly and effectively. Paying attention to the emotional factors in giving up one's independence is just as important, if not more so, and those who are able to acknowledge this fact often find that their new living situation is a lot smoother than those who merely focus on their adult parent's physical safety and begin treating them with kid gloves. After all, regardless of your parent's age or physical condition, he or she has lived a full life, and deserves the recognition that, even needing assistance, he or she is not completely infirm, especially when it comes to emotional factors. Ultimately, contentment is just as important of a factor to be focused on as physical safety and well-being.

Torn Between Your Children and Your Parents

|
By Janine Sanderstine

Do you ever feel like you're caught in the middle between your parents and your children, both of whom need your help?

Your first priority in recent years has been your children. You spend your time working a full time job, keeping abreast of your childrens' activities, driving your children and their friends from one place to another. You're right where you wanted to be at this time in your life. Although it is often challenging, it's exactly what you signed up for.

Now, suddenly you find that your parents need your help and are showing signs of their advancing age. Perhaps they are no longer able to drive safely. Or maybe they are no longer able to clean their home or do the yard work. Somehow, you didn't think this would happen. In fact, you may have known in the back of your mind that someday it would come to this, but you hadn't thought it would be anytime soon. You now have many demands on your time and energy, required to make choices to achieve the right balance. But short of being superwoman, how can you possibly do it all?

First, admit to yourself that you can't be everything to everyone at all times. Put the quality time with your own family and parents first. Next is to determine the needs of your children and your parents and checking out what resources may be available to help you. Of course, you could get help in the form of child care for your children while you spend your time caring for Mom and Dad. However, think what you'd be giving up. Children grow up so quickly, and you hate to miss even a minute of the process.

Another choice would be to get help for Mom and Dad, so that you are not the only one who is seeing to their needs. If your parents have extended family, perhaps there are others that can get involved. If you're lucky enough to have siblings in the area, sharing the responsibility could be a big help.If the budget will allow, you could consider hiring professionals to lighten the load. You could hire an aide or companion to check on them, do light housekeeping and cooking, and give them some companionship.

If Mom and Dad require even more assistance, perhaps it's time to consider a more drastic approach. If they're living in a home that requires maintenance, perhaps a move to a condominium or apartment might be helpful as gardening and home maintenance would be provided.

Another alternative, is to consider assisted living, where meals are served in the dining room, housekeeping and laundry services are provided, and there are numerous activities and outings for them to enjoy. At assisted living, they will have the added security of caregivers on staff. Seniors in assisted living facilities have the option of living independently, yet they can request additional services, such as assistance with bathing and dressing if it becomes necessary.

Yes, you are sandwiched between your children and you parents. You shouldn't have to choose, you love them both. Be sure that you make whatever plans are necessary so that you can ensure their well-being while allowing yourself to enjoy the loving moments with both.

The Cruel Reality Of Aged Care

| Thursday, March 24, 2011
By Byron Jonas

There are many of you who have elderly relatives that need the extra aged care that many elderly people demand. However, you will find that when it comes to getting them the best care, you really have to be careful. There are some harsh things happening out there. What are some of those things? Here is the harsh reality.

How about the people who lay in bed, shouting for someone to come help them. There are like five or six nurses standing around, yet none of them come to the rescue. That's a good example of how we are letting those before us down. There are many more examples than just this.

Many see patients who are left here like it's a drop off center. The family comes, drops them off, then they leave. How much care is shown here? They don't come back to see how the family member is doing. The family member doesn't know the latest news like the new grandbaby that's born.

There are many elderly people who can't help what they do. They are yelled at. They are told to stop the thing that they can't control. This tears at their emotional state. Now, that's mistreatment when you look at the care of those who can't any longer care for themselves.

Another thing we see are the doctors that are caring for these elderly patients aren't doing all that they should. They don't give them the medications they need. They tell them Medicare doesn't cover that. There are many other instances where doctors fall short of providing the aged care that they so need.

Last, but not least as there are still more things that are wrong is the fact that in many instances, they can't have anything that would remind them of home. They don't want to bring things as many employees steal from them. They take valuable items and so forth.

Dignity is something that any person this age wishes to keep. However, many who enter these homes are not left with this. It is taken away from them. Many die in nursing homes due to the mistreatment and the lack of care that is given to them. If they don't die, they become severely depressed. Some stop eating and more. You can do your part that if you know someone who might need a home or is in the home, you can check on them to ensure that they are being cared for. There are many sides to this sort of care.

Extended Life Expectancy Impacts Our Golden Years

|
By Janine Sanderstine

People in the USA are living much longer than ever before, according to the results of preliminary figures released by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) on March 17, 2011. The CDC reported that the death rate for the U.S. population for 2009 was 741 deaths per 100,000, which represents a 2.3% decrease from the 2008 rate.

In a statement by the center, it was stated that "this marks the tenth year in a row that the U.S. death rates have declined". Life expectancy rose slightly from 78 years in 2008 to 78.2 years in 2009, the center said. Death certificates from all 50 states were analyzed to get the data for the report.

During this same year, there was a 3.7% drop in heart disease, a 4.2% drop in strokes, a 4.1% drop in Alzheimer's disease, a 4.1% drop in diabetes, a 1.1% drop in cancer and deaths were down for this entire range of conditions. The agency speculates that better medical treatment, vaccination campaigns, and public health measures against smoking are likely driving these trends, and plans to more closely analyze the reasons for the decline when final data is released later this year.

No doubt about it, we will likely live longer lives than our parents and grandparents. Medicine has been improved due to the scientific advances made in recent years. Modern medicine can prevent or treat heart disease, diabetes, bacterial diseases and even cancer. Because of that, we'll all live longer on average. While these conditions may no longer killing us in the percentages that were the norm years ago, we now will live longer, increasing the odds that we will suffer additional ailments in our later years.

With the baby boomers now coming fully into the retirement age, it becomes easy to understand why we are now developing options that will allow us to live a full and creative life in our golden years. The time is now, and communities, businesses, families and friends are all devising alternatives for seniors that did not exist in the past.

Look into the adult education classes that are available locally. Everything from financial management, photography to crafts is offered specifically for seniors. The local parks and recreations department may also have a wealth of classes offered for seniors. Tai Chi, aerobics and even chair exercises are offered - there is something for every senior. These classes are geared for everyone from the very athletic senior to those with special needs. The classes offered meet the various needs of today's seniors. And don't forget to check out your local senior center. The opportunities for social and recreational activities are too numerous to mention.

Expanding the boundaries of your experiences and making new friends is an exciting part of your senior years. But, who will clean your home, do the yard work, do the grocery shopping and prepare the meals while you are taking advantage of all these opportunities? How will you manage if you are no longer able to drive or are impaired physically or mentally in any way?

Luckily, there are now a variety of senior living options available to you, depending on where you live. Assisted living facilities are now in every state and in most communities. Basic needs are provided in a secure environment. Assisted living facilities can often provide additional services with varying degrees of care, should you become ill or require additional help.

Chair Lifts For Stairs And How They Are Ordinarily Used For And How They Work

|
By Ming Sitorus

Chair lifts are used for many different reasons. Chair lifts for stairs are most commonly used by the elderly or disabled people. They can also be used to haul heavy equipment or packaging up and down the stairs. This device is great for people who are disabled or elderly and happen to live alone. On another note, even if they do live with someone, they will still be able to get around on their own.

The safety of you and your equipment is very important. Before you make any final decision and purchase anything, you should be aware of any safety hazards and features. Being in the dark about these factors could be very dangerous. It's a great idea to ask questions concerning all safety features.

The next concern of interest should be its reliability. This is very important because you depend on this special equipment for many things and reasons. When thinking about this topic, you should ask yourself how much does it need to be repaired and when. Since there are so many different types of chairs that serve for this purpose, it's a good idea to see how the machine of your choice compares to all of the others. Take a look at all of the specifics of each model and then decide which one fits all of your needs or comes pretty close to it.

Dependability is one thing, but power is truly another. Both issues are very important, but power is very crucial. When it comes to this, you should be asking yourself questions such as how much power it needs to operate and what kind of power supply does it use. Needless to say, many people don't think about this when it's time to purchase this special equipment.

It's important that you remember your warranty. This is what will save you a lot of money in the long run if your chair happens to malfunction for some reason. This warranty will have to be good enough to cover anything that can possibly go wrong. It will also keep your chair running as good as new if you take the time to care for it properly.

If you be sure to look into every aspect of the chair, your new product won't let you down. There are many things that can go wrong, but if it is taken care of properly, your chair will be able to serve you for many years.

These specially equipped machines need tune-ups and maintenance check-ups from time to time. If you try to fix things yourself, you could severely damage the machine. Purchasing a warranty will relieve you of have to do such work.

Does Working Out Cause Headaches?

| Monday, March 21, 2011
By Eric Climintine

Everybody understands that training routinely is something that you have to do if you expect to lose weight. No matter what anyone else tries to tell you, it is not possible to lose weight without being active. What most people do not realize however is that exercising can definitely be a pain. You are most likely geared up for muscle pains and aches in your back and in your joints, but are you prepared for exercise induced headaches? Unfortunately plenty of men and women suffer from exercise triggered headaches but, thankfully, there is plenty you can to do treat and prevent them. Here are a few approaches to do this.

Drink a lot of water: this is necessary in typical life but it is extra important after you work out. Headaches tend to be a result of being dehydrated and dehydration can definitely appear after a workout, particularly when you work up a good sweat (sweat drains the body's water). Drinking a normal amount of water previous to, during and after your workout will do a lot to help you keep the headache from setting in after you work out. This is typically usually all you'll need to do to treat any headaches that turn up a while after your workouts too.

Be certain you do a complete warm up and cool down. Just starting a exercise routine can jolt your system-blood will start rushing to the places you are working which takes it away from your brain and that can lead to the onset of a headache. When you warm up completely your system has a chance to increase blood flow at a far better rate and then redistribute it during your cool down so that your system doesn't get such a jarring shock.

Practice proper breathing methods during your workouts and weight liftings. Your brain wants oxygen to effectively function and also to survive. Most of us intuitively hold our breath when we are doing something difficult but that just reduces the oxygen that is available for your brain. Practicing correct breathing techniques enables you to keep a steady flow of oxygen to your brain and keep the headaches at bay.

If you realize that the headaches are happening on a regular basis and the things that you have been trying usually are not helping you prevent them, you need to talk to your doctor. Your doctor will be able to help you learn if your headaches are due to something going wrong during your workouts or if they could be caused by your diet. It's likely that you may need to employ medication to keep the headaches away. Your health care provider should be able to make it easier to figure out how to both get rid of your headaches and keep on working out and your diet.

Nobody loves having headaches; in fact, we do pretty much everything we can think of to help keep them at bay. Thankfully there is no rule that says you merely have to suffer through them. If you take the proper precautions and have the right knowledge, you could absolutely avoid your headaches!

|
By Christine Jackson

How often have you considered going to a Spa and made a decision against it citing time or financial constraints. Well, you can now have your own home-spa and indulge in unbridled luxury from the comforts of your own home. You will find a host of options available in the market with regards to massage bathtubs.

These bathtubs are extra long, extra deep, and are available in a lot of variations with regards to the massage components. For e.g. multiple jets massage bath tubs, bubble massage bath tubs and so on. Whatever maybe your choice, you are able to rest assure yourself that after a long day at work, you are able to sink into your own personal massage bathtub and experience pure bliss. Imagine jets massaging your neck, back, legs and so on! It will be relaxation personified. Include in that a soothing music playing in the background and you have created heaven on Earth.

The Air Massage Bath Tubs

One of the most crucial differences between the massage tubs of spas and your own private massage bathtub is that you can drain the water from your tub after each use.

The air massage bath tubs make use of a steady stream of air bubbles, which are released into the tub from small holes that are present at the bottom of the bathtub. There are other types of units available that not only have holes at the side of the tub, but also at the back. As many as 70 little holes will pump warm air and thus creates a large number of air bubbles that give you the definitive body massage.

What you basically get is jet therapy. This is different from the whirlpool system which massages particular parts of your body, as all areas of your body are massaged in this system. It'll not only soothe your muscles or joints but also develop, tone, and enhance their strength. Bubbles are naturally gentle in nature and hence a bather can soak in, to their hearts content.

Water Jet or Whirlpool Massage Bath Tub

As the name suggests, massage bath tubs with water jets have a system wherein, jet features, assist in propelling waters through the opening which are present at the side of the bathtubs to provide bathers an effective massage. The only thing to take care of, when you make use of these massage bathtubs is the fact that you can't indulge in bubble baths or make use of bath salts or bath oils whilst bathing.

One must also make sure that the tub is kept clean, especially, the holes, otherwise the holes will get clogged. These massage tubs; to an extent resemble the whirlpool massage tubs at the spas, not in their structure, but in their working and effect. These tubs are right now available with an inbuilt cleaning system, that precludes the need for regular cleaning.

Buying a Massage Bathtub

You must always base your decisions on your personal requirements. Some of the physical considerations whilst selecting such a bath tub would be the size of your bathroom and the shape of your bathroom. The size is very important as the massage bathtub must comfortably fit into your bathroom.

One more factor would be the cost. It would be fair to say that massage bathtubs don't come cheap, but with the numerous available choices, you are able to find something that suits your budget. Completely research the market prior to zeroing in on your choice with regards to massage bathtubs. After all, they're going to help you relax and invigorate your body. You do not want a bathtub which proclaims itself to be a superior massage option but doesn't provide you with the necessary benefits.

So select with due care and experience a haven of comfort and happiness.

Different models of tubs are also available in numerous colours and sizes. The colour and design is basically of personal preference. They're made from porcelain, cast iron, acrylic, and fiberglass. From these considerations, you need to choose which bathtub will be appropriate for your household.

Your Retirement Living Can Be Very Exciting

Many people are looking forward to retirement living. One of the most important decisions to make is where to live during retirement.

Some people choose to sell their home and buy a mobile home. There are many advantages to this. People, who own their home outright, usually have a lot of equity in their home and can live comfortably for the rest of their lives on the profit of their home.

Many retired people are glad they moved into a mobile home because it has proved to be a convenient and comfortable place to live. There is less to keep up in a mobile home compared to a traditional house. And despite the jokes about trailer parks, most retirement mobile homes are very nice places to live.

Many mobile home parks are showcases geared to senior life. Many mobile home parks had age minimums. That is, in order to live in the park, one has to be at least fifty five years old. This means that residents will not have to worry about being disturbed by children or be subjected to loud parties held by younger people.

Some retire, sell their house, and purchase a recreational vehicle. The RV can be a home on wheels for some people. Many men and women look forward to retirement so they can travel whenever they get the urge to get on the road. The RV, for them, is the perfect home.

Those who live in their RV do not have to be on the road all the time. There are many RV parks where they can stay for weeks or months at a time. When they are tired of one park, they can drive to the next city or state and set up camp there.

Some want to live in a traditional home but they want to move from where they live now. There are many factors to consider if this is the case. If health is a concern, then people should make sure they move to an area where a medical center or hospital in nearby. If someone has a particular health need, he should make sure a medical specialist is nearby.

People who are retiring should also consider the climate of the area they are looking at moving to. Some people will want to consider a climate different from the one they have grown accustomed to. But it would be a good idea for those people to visit the area first to see if they can easily adapt to the new climate before buying a home there.

Hearing Instruments - Bte Hearing And Oticon Dual Mini

| Thursday, March 17, 2011
By Joanne Wren

Hearing aids are made of different types to meet various needs of people who suffer from hearing loss. These ear pieces are made in different styles, which include: Receiver In The Ear (RITE), Behind The Ear (BTE), Completely In The Canal (CIC) and In The Canal (ITC). Each of the styles and types are made the way they are to meet specific needs of hearing loss patients. The BTE hearing aid for instance is usually used for addressing mild to acute hearing losses.

The other types of hearing aids also have their areas of competence or suitability, which ranges from compensating for mild or moderate to not so severe and severe hearing losses. A dual mini series from Oticon INC., for instance is made as a Receiver In The Ear (RITE) hearing aid and this instrument is designed to meet the needs of people suffering from serious hearing loss and high frequency hearing loss.

This is the reason why Oticon says this product offers a better choice of a BTE hearing aid because it produces less confusing sound caused by tube resonance. What does this mean then? Is this saying that right in the ear hearing aids are better than behind the ear models?

No!!! because every type of hearing aid does have an advantage, benefit or function that makes it the best choice in a given situation. Consequently, hearing aid choice is often hinged on particular situations with other factors considered.

To elaborate a bit further, it will be kind of necessary for you to appreciate the benefits or if you like functions that each type or style of hearing aid offers.

There are three important benefits that you can get from a BTE hearing aid that a RITE dual mini will not give you. First, its ear molds can be easily replaced when it no longer fits the user as a result of the person outgrowing it (this why it is often used by children). Secondly, they are not subjected to spoilage from wax in the ears like RITE models since electrical parts are not in the ear.

The third advantage is that they are cost-effective because they are usually cheaper to buy, replace or adjust. One major disadvantage of this type of hearing instrument is that it is not discreet like the oticon dual mini or other RITE aids.

An advantage that RITE technology has for users is the non-distortion of sound that you will find in BTE hearing aids. This comes as a result of the receiver or speaker's position, which is found right inside the ear so sound from outside need not travel through a tube as it is with BTE models.

Your doctor might be in a position to help you stabilize those little details, so you could keep close to them.

There are considerations you must have for any Alzheimer's patient in your vicinity. If you have one at home, you must expressly learn what makes them tick and what they like. On some of these points you need to indulge them, but on others you must be uncompromising. I don't suggest that it is a walk in the park, but it is something that you must do to get the best out of the situation of them living in with you.
